Kairos Prison Ministry

KAIROS is an ecumenical worldwide ministry that takes the love of God and the light of Christ into prisons. Similar to the Emmaus Walk or Cursillo, a team of Christian volunteers become the hands and feet of Christ for 42 residents who come seeking a new way of life. Over 30,000 volunteers present the ministry to more than 15,000 inmates annually, in over 250 institutions in 33 states and 7 countries.

Asbury especially participates in and supports the Kairos community at Limestone Correctional Facility in Capshaw, Alabama. There are also teams that support KAIROS in Costa Rica at the men's prison in San Sebastian and the El Buen Pastor women's prison. Opportunities to serve include: going in the prison on a team, serving on the kitchen team, making posters, placemats, letters and other signs of love, and praying (especially during retreat vigils.) Retreat weekends are held three times per year at Limestone, once per year in Costa Rica for men and once for women. From time to time, retreats are also held for those in protective custody.

How can you be a part of KAIROS at Limestone?

In the context of Kairos, AGAPE is a tangible expression of God’s unconditional love, given to the pilgrims by the expansive family of God. You are invited to serve in this prison ministry. We need your participation!

Please join this ministry in the way you feel called. Above all, pray for the pilgrims, the correctional officers, and for all of the residents of Limestone Correctional Facility …that this experience of God’s love will truly transform their hearts and lives.

  • Prayer - Commit to one or more times on the Prayer Vigil list from a team member.
  • Cookies - 12,000 home-made cookies are eaten during a Kairos weekend. There are some specifics for the kind of cookie that can be given. Favorites are Chocolate Chip and Peanut Butter. Brownies and Rice Krispy cookies also bring big smiles and often memories of home, a grandmother, or someplace or someone who at one time cared for them. To download details click here.
  • Posters, Banners, and Placemats - Hand decorated posters and placemats help pilgrims know they are not alone. Everyone can step into the prison by signing a poster from your church, Sunday School class, Reunion Group, - everyone you can think of. Children’s work is especially touching to the men.
  • Financial Support - It costs approximately $150 per pilgrim on each Kairos. Team members commit to time and sponsorship of one pilgrim, in addition to their own expense payment. Donations to KAIROS of Alabama are another way that all persons can minister to those in prison. You can also ask a team member about sponsoring a $5 meal for them as well.
