Upper Sand Mountain

Upper Sand Mountain Parish is a cooperative ministry of ten small membership, rural United Methodist Churches serving near 1000 square miles of Southern Appalachian Alabama. The cooperative seeks to strengthen member congregations that they may better serve their members and to provide local and global opportunities for them and others to become involved in service and community development ministries. The Ministry Center Coordinator, Tayna Rains, is serving as the Interim Director.  Tayna is a lifelong part of Upper Sand Mountain Parish, and is excited to be on board to help the ministries continue to grow.  Also serving on the staff of USMP from the GBGM, we have a US-2 Missionary from Oregon, Bonnie Monk.

Last year, Upper Sand Mountain Parish celebrated 40 years of “Miracles on the Mountain.”  Asbury has a long-standing relationship with USMP, partnering with them to come alongside their local churches and congregations. We have been active in the annual Christmas toy drive helping to provide toy stores for area children who otherwise might not have any gifts on Christmas morning.  The children from Asbury have helped in packing seeds for the “Gardens of Plenty” program that provides seeds and fertilizer to 400 local families so that they may grow their own food to be more self-sufficient.  We also partner with their “Heart and Hand” housing project, a home ownership program for low-income families through Asbury’s “Madison to the Mountain” ministry. We look forward to new avenues to continue to build relationships at USMP, joining in their mission to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ, both in word and action.
