Voz de Libertad

The people who sat in darkness saw great light; and to them who sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.” Matthew 4:16

Voices of Liberty is a Christian, volunteer, lay-led, ecumenical continuing ministry to the incarcerated and their loved ones in Costa Rica.

Carlos Cunningham is the founder and director of Voz de Libertad (Voice of Liberty), dedicated to evangelize and disciple prisoners and their families in Costa Rica. Carlos’ perseverance and winsome ways have opened doors in the prisons that have been previously cut off to Protestant ministers in Costa Rica. We entered into a strategic partnership with Voz de Libertad in 2005, offering many opportunities for Asbury members to join in the work through prison ministry, as well as other evangelism and discipleship activities. Carlos and his wife, Karla, also pastor Iglesia Bíblica Calle Blancos in San Jose.

While still in his teens, Carlos began to visit prisons with other youth from his church. During one of these visits, Carlos came in contact with his cousin who had been incarcerated for stealing a bicycle. Costa Rican prisons do not segregate inmates based on severity of offense to the degree that U.S. prisons do. His cousin was in a cell block with convicted murderers and was murdered by another inmate. This grieved Carlos greatly and caused him to respond to God’s call on his life to go full-time in prison ministry.
